Environmental Wall Systems walls just got even less expensive with the extension of the ever-popular Bonus Depreciation. As soon as President Obama signs the bill, (expected any day now), the 50% Bonus Depreciation will be extended to include all qualifying assets, (movable walls), purchased in 2010. Here is the overview:
Extended additional first year depreciation: In the provision bonus depreciation has been reinstated for all of calendar year 2010 for property placed in service after 12/31/09 but before January 1, 2011. As you may be aware the rule allows you to claim 50% of the qualifying assets cost as depreciation in the year it’s placed in service. The remainder of the assets cost after the application of the 50% deduction is subject to normal MACRS depreciation. The rules remain unchanged when compared with prior years regarding the first year 50% provision, new qualifying personal property, etc.
Ex. If you made a movable wall purchase of $100,000 in 2010 the value you would claim come tax time would be $50,000, (plus standard depreciation); thus lowering the amount of taxes you owe by a considerable margin.
This does not apply to drywall or fixed construction, giving another gold star in the demountable / movable walls column. The sustainable value of movable walls is greater now than ever as they are now sustainable on your future tax liability. Couple that with the fact that they are movable and that EWS walls are made of the highest content of recycled materials in the industry and you’ve done a darn good deed to society.
A tip of the hat goes to Uncle Sam and Mr. Obama, (who I forgot to mention is one of my contacts on linkedIn), for helping earn another stride to movable walls in the interior wall race. Glass! Glass! Glass!
As demountable, (aka movable, modular, partition..), walls continue to gain popularity in the interior wall industry, certain trends within these demountable walls gain popularity as well. While there are tons of finishes that can be achieved by using demountable interior walls; from fabrics, marker boards, and vinyls, to laminates, woods, cork-boards and more, the most popular these days is glass. Being the coolest kid in school isn’t simple.
Glass itself can be finished in a variety of ways from etched, laminated, and back-painted, to recycled, resins, polymers and more. The key feature to glass is that it can provide visual privacy by being opaque, yet still allow enough light to travel through your space resulting in worker efficiency and environmental happiness. Aesthetically this benefit cannot be reached when using other finishes as you can see in the picture of Environmental Wall Systems wall panels above as the light flows throughout the space.
Another benefit of glass is that it can be customized with company logo’s and branding, as well as employee names and titles. Glass can also have nearly any material out there sandwiched in between two pieces to create unique walls for your office, see the other picture above of Environmental Wall Systems wall with bamboo chutes inserted into a glass resin provided by 3form.
Finally, glass is sustainable in a couple of ways. As seen in the pictures the Environmental Wall Systems glass panels are 100% reusable, keeping the materials out of the landfill and giving them a sustainable future. Glass can also be easily recycled so when it reaches its lifetime on your project it can be broken down and used again on another project.

Environmental Wall Systems builds high quality sustainable green walls that offer an environmentally and affordable alternative to standard drywall construction. Environmental Wall Systems (EWS) has been building green movable walls for more than ten years. EWS started as a wall installation company installing every movable wall system on the market. After learning a variety of office wall solutions, we developed our own wall system, IrisWall.
15 years later EWS movable wall systems have serviced clients in every sector of the movable office wall market from government offices to small businesses. They have also found success delivering walls to many corporations as well as clients in the education sector.
While many movable office wall providers have adopted a green story for their wall systems, EWS can competently say that their walls are 100% reusable; that’s pretty darn sustainable. Not to mention the walls are comprised of 80% post-consumer recycled aluminum, 95% recycled gypsum, and the IrisFiber insulation used in the wall panels is so clean is doesn’t need a health warning label like traditional rotary-spun fiberglass insulation found in most walls. On top of all of that EWS manufactures their wall systems in the USA and sources all of their wall materials from local distributors. All in all EWS movable walls can help your green building project qualify for up to 15 LEED credits.
Stay tuned as EWS integrates more green ideas into their wall products with corn-based materials and the introduction of a new bio-wall; a wall that is actually alive!? Until then, take care and live green.

Previously I wrote about the benefits of using movable walls instead of drywall when moving into a new office facility. The misconception that green building practices cost more than conventional building ways has been disproved. Green building practices can save you money up front, and will continue to repay you throughout the life of the product.
When it comes time to reconfigure your interior walls to accommodate for a change in staff or just to give yourself a bigger office, movable walls really begin to shine in terms of cost saving and ease of move. In a recent study based on a 15,000 sq. foot office space it cost 94% less to reconfigure the movable walls than it did to demolish and rebuild the drywall. Not to mention the disturbance to your staff caused by demolishing the drywall only to rebuild it within the same area. Movable walls can be reconfigured after business hours with little to no disruption of work flow and in half the time it would take to rebuild with drywall.
Whether you are looking to save money, have greater design options, or looking to help reduce your impact on the environment; movable walls are a great solution to your interior wall needs. Employee efficiency and productivity can be increased based on the environment they are provided, and a dusty dingy drywall office is not a way to improve your environment. Whether you call them demountable walls, glass walls, modular walls, partition walls, or just walls; Environmental Wall Systems movable walls can help you improve your triple bottom line of People, Planet, and Profit.

At a time when interior walls are closely monitored when considering building costs, movable walls can actually benefit you now, and in the years to come. There’s a misconception that green building tactics cost more than conventional ways and won’t reflect an ROI that pays you back in a few years. This is wrong.
Through the American Recovery & Re-investment Act (ARRA) some movable walls purchased in 2009 can qualify for up to 50% depreciation in the first tax year. That’s in addition to one of the biggest benefits in using movable walls instead of drywall, which is that they are classified as furniture so:
- Movable walls depreciate over 7 years vs. drywall depreciating over 39 years, (i.e. that’s more cash in your pocket each year to spend on other costs).
- Environmental Wall Systems movable walls are 100% reusable offering a truly sustainable product to help with future reconfigurations in terms of cost and waste
- Movable walls are cleaner than drywall providing better Indoor Air Quality for your workers, increasing worker efficiency
- Also more aesthetically pleasing and help with day lighting your space, both increasing worker efficiency
- EWS walls are completely unitized, manufactured to your request eliminating the need for multiple vendors and multiple purchase orders.
Feel free to contact us today for more information on the benefits in using movable walls and how we can help you improve your triple bottom line of People, Planet, and Profit.
